Commercial Thinking · 3 min read

The agreements that quietly shape how a SaaS company scales.

A contract is also a set of operating instructions. The business has to live with what it promises.

Look beyond the signature

An agreement may begin in a sales conversation, but its consequences reach into product, customer success, finance, and operations. A bespoke support promise or an unusual billing arrangement creates work long after the negotiation is over.

Make exceptions visible

Exceptions are sometimes commercially sensible. The difficulty comes when nobody can see them together. A growing company benefits from knowing which commitments are standard, which are deliberate exceptions, and who owns delivery.

Design for the people doing the work

A useful commercial framework helps teams understand where they can move quickly and where another perspective is needed. It connects the agreement to the way the business actually works, including how commitments are recorded and handed over.

Review what growth has changed

Terms that made sense for the first few customers may create friction at a different scale. Periodically reviewing recurring negotiation points and delivery challenges can reveal where the framework needs to evolve.
